Mega Millions lotto is a multi-state lottery game with multi-million jackpots and lots of fun. Today you can buy lottery ticket from a retailer in 42 states. Mega Millions lotto is perhaps the most popular lottery game in America. With millions of lotto players (more than in any other lottery game in the U.S.), jackpots can roll over to even higher levels in no time.
Originally popular as The Big Game, Mega Millions was initially played in six states: Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia. Friday lottery draws were held until February 1998, when lottery officials commenced first Tuesday drawings. Prior to January 1999, jackpot winners could only receive their winning payments in annual installments over several dozen years. Allowing lottery winners to claim their prizes in cash contributed enormously to the lottery popularity.
During the following three years New Jersey, New York and Ohio joined The Big Game, right before the lottery changed its name to Mega Millions in May, 2002. To improve brand perception, the sixth lotto ball, "Big Money Ball", was changed to the "Mega Ball." During 2002-2005 Washington, Texas, and California joined Mega Millions lottery as well.
