Missouri Guy Wins $893.5 Million, Still Just Wants to Stay Home

Imagine winning almost a billion dollars — $893.5 million to be exact — and instead of rushing out to buy yachts or islands, you shrug and say, “I’d rather just hang out at home.”

That’s the Missouri winner who stepped forward to claim his half of the $1.787 billion Powerball jackpot. He isn’t reinventing himself as a high-roller. He’s a self-described homebody whose perfect day is staying in and relaxing with his wife.

It’s refreshing. We’ve all heard the stories about flashy cars and sprawling mansions. This winner’s big plan? Lighten his wife’s workload and enjoy more time together.

“I’m a multi-millionaire… and I was still doing laundry last night.”

There were a few sleepless nights between checking the numbers and visiting Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City. But as he put it, it was the best kind of problem to have.

The Missouri Lottery confirmed it’s the largest prize ever won in the state: $893.5 million, topping the previous $293.7 million record from 2012. He chose the lump-sum payout of $410.3 million rather than 30 annual payments over 29 years.

The ticket — bought at a QuikTrip on Lusher Road in St. Louis for the Sept. 6 drawing — matched all five white balls and the red Powerball: 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and Powerball 17. Odds of doing that: 1 in 292 million.

Meanwhile, the game rolls on. The next Powerball annuity jackpot estimate is $127 million. Compared to nearly $900 million, it feels almost modest.

Takeaway: Money this big can change everything. Or, if you’re Missouri’s newest multimillionaire, it just means more quiet nights at home with the person you love. And honestly, that sounds like a pretty good way to spend $893.5 million.

Powerball is offered in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2.
