Michigan Couple Scratches Off $2 Million — On Their Damn Anniversary, No Less

Monday, June 9, 2025

Because nothing says "I love you" like flipping fate the bird and winning the lottery together.

So there’s this couple in Auburn Hills, Michigan — let’s call them the Luckiest Married People Alive™ — who just celebrated their wedding anniversary in the most unrelatable way possible: by winning two million freaking dollars on a scratch-off ticket.

Yeah. While most of us are fighting over where to go for dinner or if we remembered the anniversary at all, these two scratched their way into millionaire status with a $20 ticket called — and I’m not making this up — “Diamonds & Gold.” Because subtlety is dead, and Michigan knows how to party.

Here’s how it went down: wife pops into the local Mobil station, grabs a scratcher she and her husband have a thing for (yes, they scratch together — it’s their thing, don’t judge), and boom — jackpot. At first, they couldn’t believe it. Her husband squints at the ticket and basically goes, “Uh, honey... this says two million?”

Naturally, they go full Sherlock — store scanner, friend’s app, disbelief, existential dread, joy, shaking hands, you know the drill.

Eventually, they confirmed it: they were officially $2 million richer. Or, more precisely, about $1.3 million after taking the lump sum, which is still more than enough to pay off your house, invest, and not worry about your kids having to work part-time jobs at Arby’s during college.

So what are they doing with the money? Buying a house, investing smartly, and saving for their kids’ education — which is exactly what boring financially responsible millionaires say. Good on them.

According to the Michigan Lottery, only one $2 million prize is still out there in the “Diamonds & Gold” game. So if you're thinking of playing, just remember: your odds of winning are 1 in 3.64 — which is still better than your odds of having an anniversary half this epic.

Moral of the story? Skip the roses next year. Go for the scratchers.
